Who can be included in a permanent residence application?
Usually the main applicant, their spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, and dependent children. Older children may qualify in some circumstances. Age limits and definitions are set by IRCC and change over time.
Where is the application submitted?
Most economic applications are now filed online with IRCC. Depending on the program, parts of the file may be handled by an office inside or outside Canada.
Do I need to travel to Canada during the process?
Generally no. Some programs value familiarity with the province or community you plan to live in.
Will I have to attend an interview?
Most applicants are not interviewed, but IRCC can request an interview with the applicant and, sometimes, family members.
How does permanent residence affect my taxes?
Canada taxes on residency, not citizenship. Once you become a resident for tax purposes, you are generally taxed on your worldwide income. Speak to a tax professional about your situation.
